The Campaign

Between the 10th and 12th June 2019, over 20,000 delegates from 98 countries passed through London’s Kings Cross to attend the CogX Festival of AI and Emerging Technology which – in its third year – chose to support and highlight the implementation of the Global Goals as its initiative of choice. Two SDG Advocates were present at CogX this year: Jeffrey Sachs and Richard Curtis. Both used the platform as an opportunity to stress the importance of accelerated action on the SDGs.

Through Project Everyone and partners 2030Vision – the sustainability initiative of tech company ARM – the festival sought to build powerful, cross-sector partnerships to accelerate progress against the Global Goals, encouraging attendees not only to learn about the Goals, but to consider the role they could play in helping realise them.

The Delivery

TITLE AREA

As well as ensuring that the Global Goals were integrated across festival branding, stage sessions, a central Global Goals hub and even an ice cream van, this call-to-arms culminated in stage session hosted by UN SDG Advocate Richard Curtis, in which he presented the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals as the framework around which the growing tech for good movement should rally.

Richard Curtis was joined by Jacqueline Fuller (VP, Google & President, Google.org), Claire Melamed (CEO, Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data)., Kriti Sharma (Founder, AI for Good & UN Young Leader for the SDGs) and Dominic Vergine (Founder, 2030Vision & Head of Sustainability, ARM), who collectively challenged the 1,000 strong audience – made up of the world’s best accelerators – to take urgent action on the Global Goals before it’s too late.

'The Global Goals are an urgent and critical subject. The Goals are part of our common humanity.’

The impact

TITLE AREA

The session culminated in a powerful rallying cry from Richard Curtis, saying: ‘The Global Goals are an urgent and critical subject. Try and remember that when you’re doing something small and boring – think about what that action really entails, because there are lives at stake and that’s what you’re fighting for. The Goals are part of our common humanity. They are above national politics, and they are the answers and the solutions to the emergencies that we are all facing. That is why you need to get to work, and get to work now.’

Later in London Tech Week, on June 13th, The Founders Forum brought together the world’s leading digital and technology entrepreneurs, corporate CEOs and senior investors to engage in open debate, brainstorming, discussion, and problem solving. In a fireside chat, Richard Curtis and Matthew Freud – founder of communications agency freuds – discussed the importance of working faster and harder together to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030, calling for those in the room to help accelerate progress through technological innovation and investment.

This was followed by a brainstorming session where founders came together to answer the question: How can Tech Help Solve the Global Goals?. Ten founders, who are already driving innovation and action on a range of different Goals, led breakout groups to identify new ways of addressing the world’s biggest challenges. In just an hour, leaders collaborated across industries and issues to identify a range of exciting ideas and solutions – proving that everyone in the room has the potential to impact consumer behaviour and put pressure on leaders.

The session culminated with Richard Curtis calling on all the founders to consider setting aside 10% of their time, or of their organisation, to not only focus on innovation for the Goals over the next ten years, but to connect with others working on the same challenges as them, reminding them that together we can deliver a much larger impact than if we remain in silos.

The campaign

From the 21st to 24th January 2015, over 2,500 heads of state, business leaders, philanthropists and artists arrived at Davos for the World Economic Forum to discuss global issues and solutions.

Awaiting the influential attendees were a collection of 193 snowmen, one for each country, taking an icy stance against the continuation of inequality, poverty, and climate change. Each snowman was wrapped in a scarf that represented the specific country and carried a sign to express their outrage.

In addition to the snowman protest, Project Everyone – along with the World Food Programme and UNICEF – hosted the official launch of the #HealthyNotHungry campaign with a focus on action against malnutrition.

The Delivery

TITLE AREA

For the launch of #HealthyNotHungry we brought leaders together to commit to action for Goal 2.  The campaign launch was backed by world renowned chefs Jamie Oliver, Sam Kass, Manal Al-Alem, David Hertz, UNDP goodwill ambassador with the SDG Fund Joan Roca and UNICEF ambassador and SDG advocate Shakira.

We produced a film for the launch as well as an accompanying toolkit for the WFP which lay out the 5 simple steps we must take to achieve a healthy, not hungry world by 2030.

Project Everyone also partnered with the WFP and ECHO on the #WhatFoodMeans campaign to raise awareness of resilient people, strong partnerships, and the fight to end hunger in Ethiopia. The short film we produced tells the story of how, in 2016, international support from the WFP, funded by the EU, helped Ethiopia avert a food crisis, saving millions of lives and protecting the futures of families and communities. The film was shared by famous activists from across the world including Juan Mata, Jamie Oliver, Kim Clijsters, Anders Lindegaard, and David Morrissey.

These protesting snowmen send a very serious message in a light hearted way. Like them, unless we seize the opportunities of 2015, they will simply melt away without a trace’

The impact

TITLE AREA

Both our campaigns were a success at Davos. Hundreds of people supported our Snowman campaign by tweeting selfies with the tag #snowmanselfie – some famous faces included Chris Martin, Will.I.Am, Bill Gates, Richard Branson, Amina Muhammed and Bono.

A total of 2,452 mentions of the Snowman Selfie generated 43,291,299 impressions, while the hashtag itself resulted in 29,251,819. Further, the hashtag #Action2015 gathered 22,675,641 impressions over the course of the five-day event.

The issues raised through the #HealthyNotHungry campaign were also featured at Goalkeepers. At the Global Goals Awards we presented the Healthy Not Hungry Award to Bernard Coulibaly – the Deputy Prefect of Yorosso in the South of Mali who has focused his work on reducing child malnutrition in his community. During the Goalkeepers conference, we announced $250 million in planned investments for the Power of Nutrition, an innovative partnership working to tackle the damage to children’s lives and futures caused by undernutrition.

The Global Nutrition Summit in November presented the chance to reflect on and accelerate progress toward the Global Goals on nutrition. For the Summit, we created a set of infographics to reflect both the Goalkeepers Report and the new Power of Nutrition announcement made in Milan. To conclude #HealthyNotHungry, we produced a short wrap up film of the campaign to demonstrate what a year of action on nutrition looks like.

The Brief

In societies around the world, gender discrimination and inequitable gender norms are much more likely to limit girls’ ability to go to school, live free from violence, self-direct their life-course, and enjoy a level of social status and value equal as compared to their brothers and male peers. The Global Goals campaign is providing a unifying, rallying call for commitments that will advance the health, wellbeing and rights of girls and women.

On the 20th anniversary of the release of the Spice Girls’ Wannabe video, the campaign marked twenty years of Girl Power with an updated version “#WhatIReallyReallyWant”. The film projected the voices of girls and women all over the world telling world leaders what Goals they ‘really really want’ to achieve to improve their lives.

I think this film is a wonderful idea. How fabulous it is that after 20 years, the legacy of the Spice Girls’ - 'Girl Power’ - is being used to encourage and empower a whole new generation. "

CIVICUS and Development Initiatives

The Brief

When world leaders signed up to the Global Goals, they promised to ensure that ‘no one is left behind’. That’s because, although we have made huge progress towards a better world, too many people have been left behind as a result of who they are or where they live. To turn this pledge from words to reality, Project Everyone joined forces with CIVICUS and Development Initiatives, in July 2016 – with the support of the UK’s Department for International Development – to establish the Leave No One Behind (LNB) Partnership.

Leading on the ‘engagement’ portion of the Partnership, Project Everyone created content to engage people around the world and tell the stories of those who are being left behind.

Play Video

The Approach

TITLE AREA

The Leave No One Behind film was created to bring the concept of Leave No One Behind to life. Using scenes from Yann Arthus-Bertrand’s film ‘HUMAN’, this powerful film tells an emotional story around the world’s most disadvantaged, giving voice to some of the most marginalized people and inspiring action for a better world. The film was launched in front of world leaders at the opening of the UN General Assembly, in September 2016 and was shown at events around the world.

Ahead of the 2017 High Level Political Forum, the LNB Partnership joined forces with UN Women for the Leave No Woman or Girl Behind campaign. For this, Project Everyone created a series of short awareness raising films spotlighting many of the issues affecting women and girls who are at risk of being left behind in Africa and around the world. They powerfully tell the stories of women and girls across Kenya who are facing different aspects of poverty, exclusion and discrimination

Leave no one behind (LNOB) represents the unequivocal commitment of all UN Member States to eradicate poverty in all its forms, end discrimination and exclusion, and reduce the inequalities and vulnerabilities that leave people behind and undermine the potential of individuals and of humanity as a whole”

The Impact

TITLE AREA

The final output produced for the Partnership was a data visualization tool created to support on and offline campaign efforts on Leave No One Behind. The data visualization platform allows you to create your own campaign materials, making them adaptable to each individual context. The tool can be used to create Twitter graphics or posters for Goals 1-5. Users can input their own data into the images, generating campaign assets tailored to an international, national or regional audience. The data visualization platform is currently available in English, Spanish, French and Swahili.

To cap things off, we presented the Leave No One Behind Award to Felix Manyogote, during the 2017 Global Goals Awards which took place at the same time as the UN General Assembly. Felix is a social entrepreneur and medical student dedicating his life to help others. Through his project MAMA AFYA he provides free maternal and newborn health services, distributes free clean delivery and newborn kits and develops an effective line distribution so that women are connected irrespective of their location.

The Campaign

2015 was the launch year for the Sustainable Development Goals. Project Everyone was formed as a group of specialist campaigners and communicators, working with partners to deliver a three phased campaign to:

1) Rebrand the Sustainable Development Goals:

Writing the 17 goals in a more digestible, accessible form, and create a beautiful, easily communicable visual brand

2) Give them the loudest possible launch at the United Nations and beyond

3) Tell Everyone – aim to reach 7 billion people in 7 days

Our mission was that once the goals were announced, every single person on the planet (that’s 7 billion people) will receive the goals in some form or medium within 7 days of them being announced.

The Impact

TITLE AREA

In the week after the Goals were agreed at the United Nations, it is estimated The Global Goals reached 40% of the world’s population. We achieved 11 billion media impressions and reached 3 billion people through a series of creative communications, advertising and social media campaigns.

Key components of this success were a text sent to 925 million people, radio programmes in 75 countries, tens of millions of school children receiving a lesson on the goals, homepage takeovers of Google, YouTube, Baidu, MSN and Bing and an advertising campaign spanning cinema, TV and poster sites.

Project Everyone had creative hubs operating in the UK, Singapore, Brazil, South Africa and India to ensure global reach and relevance.

UN Women

The Brief

UN Women, grounded in the vision of equality enshrined in the Charter of the United Nations, works for the elimination and discrimination against women and girls; the empowerment of women and the achievement of equality between women and men as partners and beneficiaries of development, human rights, humanitarian action and peace and security. The year 2020 marked  the 25th anniversary of the 4th UN World Conference on Women and the adoption of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action (1995), the international blueprint for gender equality and women’s empowerment. For this milestone year, UN Women launched the year-long Generation Equality public advocacy campaign in 2019. In light of COVID-19, the Generation Equality campaign was extended to 2021.

In this context, UN Women hired Project Everyone to lead a global video-driven engagement campaign to raise awareness of the Generation Equality Forum in Paris (30th June – 2nd July 2021) and its ambition and to create a youth-orientated social media activation to drive interest and re-energize public attention with the umbrella campaign #ActforEqual and build on the gender equality movement.

The Approach

TITLE AREA

We produced the self-shot and archive footage film, Generations Together, that united inspirational people from across geographies, generations and sectors to deliver a key message; that we want to live in a world where women’s right are equal rights and where every girl and woman can make their voices heard and achieve their dreams. From 7 year-old Sama to renowned activists and leaders like Leymah Gbowee, and Chair of the Elders Mary Robinson to prominent figures such as Megan Rapinoe, Winston Duke and Jazz Jennings to grassroot campaigns; each contributing to the message of why we need to #ActForEqual.

Notable leaders, activists and celebrities in the film include:

  • YouTube star, Jazz Jennings who is one of the youngest publicly documented people to be identified as transgender. Jazz’s #ActForEqual message is ‘we deserve to be treated equally and respected for who we are.’
  • Peace activist Leymah Gbowee who is responsible for leading the Women of Liberia Mass Action for Peace movement that helped bring an end to the Second Liberian Civil War in 2003. Leymah’s #ActForEqual message is ‘we need more women at the peace table’.
  • Former President of Ireland, UN High Commissioner on Human Right and Chair of The Elders, Mary Robinson also joined the #ActForEqual campaign to share her message that ‘we shouldn’t have to smash glass ceilings.’
  • TikTok influencer and author, Evie Meg who – through her educational and funny videos – raises awareness and debunks myths and stigma surrounding Tourette’s syndrome. Evie added her voice by saying ‘let’s break down barriers and change perceptions.’

The full cast list is: Sama Katurji, Hajer Sharief, Khothalang Leuta, Winston Duke, Megan Rapinoe, Nadine Gasman, Chamathya Fernando, Leymah Gbowee, Muniba Mazari, Zidane Cruz, Tatiana Calderon, Gitanjali Rao, Bonita Sharma, Kyzzhibek Batyrkanova, Tarcila Rivera Zea, Ixchel Maria Jose Lucas Adolfo, Delphine O, Mary Robinson, Cecilia Moyoviri, Sharon Bhagwan-Rolls, Jazz Jennings, Evie Meg, Sandra Sanchez, King Kaka, Dr. Denis Mukwege, Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka

The film was launched ahead of the forum across all UN Women, Global Goals and partner social channels. As the film’s call to action was for the public to respond and answer ‘Why Do We Need To Act For Equal?’ it acted as catalyst for public engagement with the Generation Equality social campaign #ActforEqual. To amplify the campaign further, we collaborated with TikTok UK to engage their creators in responding to the call to action and inspiring their audiences to do the same.

Why do we need to Act For Equal? To build a movement of young people, influencers, activists and leaders to be a force for change”

Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka

The Impact

TITLE AREA

The Film and TikTok Activation:

The film garnered over 3 million views across all social media platforms, with 70% coming from Facebook.  On TikTok, ahead of the Generations Together Forum the hashtag #ActForEqual was given prominence in the discovery page for a week – key real estate for any campaign. It generated 14.4 million views, 750 videos submitted for the challenge and 21.4k viewers tuned into the live stream featuring TikTok creator Solana Baptiste and activist Selin Ozunaldim.

The Forum:

The forum launched a 5 year action journey to achieve irreversible progress towards gender equality, founded on a series of concrete, ambitious and transformative actions, including $40 billion in financial commitments.
