On Sunday 23rd September during the UN General Assembly, Richard Curtis, in his role as UN SDG Advocate, brought a film to world leaders as part of an “SDG moment” presented to bring focus to the Sustainable Development Goals. It was a moment that kicked off the General Debate, chaired by Secretary-General António Guterres.
The SDG Moment was a ten-minute, scripted production focused on the Sustainable Development Goals, created to show world leaders the importance of taking bold action to help the most vulnerable as they prepared to engage with and address one another at the General Assembly.
The moment featured an introduction by renowned speaker and UN SDG Advocate Leymah Gbowee, a film of Kofi Annan’s farewell speech, and the SDG moment film created by Richard Curtis.
The moment reminded leaders that the SDGs are the solution for our common challenges, and the pathway to achieve the world we want by 2030. It also celebrated the significant progress that has been made towards achieving the Goals.
The script and film from the moment can be found below:
Introductory Speech by Leymah Gbowee, UN SDG Advocate:
I am so proud to stand before you in this hallowed hall as a United Nations Advocate for the Sustainable Development Goals.
The SDGs and the 2030 Agenda are an agenda of hope.
For people. For planet. For prosperity. For partnership. For peace.
And they are a promise:
We will end global poverty by 2030.
We will build a life of dignity for all.
We will leave no one behind.
The agenda carries the dream of the dearly departed Kofi Annan to a new generation. We remember his farewell speech as Secretary General, as relevant today as it was then…

That hope for a common future is embodied in the Sustainable Development Goals.
As a member of the SDG Advocates, I am honoured to present this short film on the Goals.
It demonstrates what we have been able to achieve.
It also highlights the work that lies ahead – and all that we can achieve when we work together for people and planet, and for the greater good of our collective humanity.
